Overtone Scale

Overtone is known as one of saxphone practices, and maybe known as quite a tough pronunciation.

MB sometimes plays continuous overtones making a scale like : F-G-A-Bb-C-D.
(In this section, going to write note and fingering as Bb.)

Basic note: F is pronunced by the fingering of Low-Bb form with the octave-key.
Following notes are made by right and left little fngers moving, like Fig.-A.

MB's characteristic tone phrase can be heard, as an example, in the sax solo of "El Nigno" in the album "Two Bloks From The Edge".

Even MB, sometimes fails to pronunce. (In such case, MB trys until his Selmar obeys.)

The 1st F is not so difficult. Just to recall beginner days, everyone must have known.

From this basic fingering, to detach left small finger makes 2nd G.
Then, to detach right small finger makes 3rd A.

The problem is next Bb.

I have trainned for a long time, but succeed rate is in a poor range.

I have read an advice of MB at an interview :
'For overtone, to concentrate on your upper front teeth'
Surely, I'm concentrating, however, frustration continues.

So..., I have found a way to play a foul.
To pronunce Bb, touch D# button a little. An instant, that's enough.
With this unfair method, you come to get Bb easily....
(It requires right little finger to touch both Low-C and D# keys.)

Like Bb, last D can be also pronunced easily with openning the parm-D key. (just a moment with a slice touch)

If you are in trouble for pronumcing these notes, it may open the way to MB's overtone scale.

MBに限ったわけではありませんが、サックスの練習でもよく使われる奏法です。
（以降、音階/指使いはBbで記述します。）

再低音のBb＋オクターブキーで倍音Fを出し、以降左手と右手の小指の動作のみで
F-G-A-Bb-C-D
を出すことになります。

MBの演奏は「Two Bloks From The Edge」の「El Nigno」などで聴くことができます。

なかなか不安定な音で、MBでさえたまに外すことがあるのをライブで確認できます。
特に振動ﾓｰﾄﾞが切り替わるBbとDが難しいと思います。
インタビューでこのコツを訊かれたMBは「前歯に集中するといい」と発言しているのを読んだことがあります。
私はこれを読んで「前歯に集中して」練習しましたが、やはり難しいですね。

さて、今回はズルして楽にこのトーンを出す方法を紹介したいと思います。
うまく出せない方はまずこの方法できっかけをつかんで練習すると良いのではないかと思います。
（ただし最初のFを何とか自力で出せることが前提ですが。）

正調の指使いは図のAとのおりです。

F-G-Aまでは比較的簡単に出せますが、Bbが最初の関門となります。
ここでは図のBのように（軽くでもよいですが）Dbキーに触れ、ホールを開けます。こうするとオーバートーンを割と簡単に出すことができます。右手小指はすでにLow-Cをおさえているので少々ずらし、何とか同時にLow-CとD#を両方おさえることになります。

まで来ましたが、
さらに次の関門がDです。

ここは図のようにパームキーDをやはり一瞬触れてホールを開けます。

少々ピッチは注意が必要ですが、なかなか出せないフレーズのきっかけになるのではないでしょうか。
